Overheard at Booth 1: Not Suitable for Work (2026)

Not Suitable for Work (2026)

Season 1

Hulu original

Not renewed, so there won't be a season 2.  13 episodes.

 [NOTE: spoiler alert!]

Focuses on the lives of five twentysomethings trying to navigate work, love, and life in Manhattan in 2026.  Most of us will find this reminiscent of Friends and Seinfeld, but in start contrast to both of those shows, these characters actually have some heart underneath what, at first, seems to be the shallowness of youth.

Three guys live together in one apartment, and two gals live in the apartment across the hall, and they cross paths and try different romantic entanglements and gain jobs and lose jobs and there are some really good lines along the way.

While this series does have the usual aspect of having Bourgeoise Bohemians living in an impossibly unattainable living conditions, it does tackle the subject of going from riches-to-rags and how easily that can happen.

For more specifics: Kel's parents want him to become a doctor, but he leaves medical school to focus on his acting and has to take a job as a substitute teacher in a girls private school, where the 14 year olds prove to be quite emotionally savage.

Abby (his neighbor and crush) is apprenticed to a celebrity stylist, and she takes the bold move of stealing a client, which ends in her having to work in a retail clothing store.

Her friend, AJ, moves in with her to take a job at a high-paced financial firm, where she becomes romantically entangled with her boss (which is the most predictable and somewhat tedious part of the entire series).

She is the focus of the rather disturbingly romantic Davis (who falls in love with any human with a XX chromosome), who is the roommate of Kel and is also her coworker.

Rounding out the crew is Josh, who is possibly the most interesting character: he hooked up with AJ during the COVID year for one night, which leads to some tension throughout the episodes.  He is also the spoiled rich son of a media mogul, who owns the television station for which Josh wishes to intern.  He gets the job on his last name alone; however, he is imbued with an idealistic reverence for the anchor of the top show,  Wes.   However, Josh's opportunities for advancement are stymied by Wes's ex-wife, Paula, who is the producer - and as we find out - the true power and intellect behind Wes's success, and she sees Josh as nothing more than a Nepo Baby.

Thirteen episodes.  That's all you get.  Unless someone comes along and picks it up for another season.

For me, some of the minor plot lines showed true promise.  For one, I would have liked to have seen Kel's character come to the realization that, while he dreamed of being an actor, his true calling is teaching.  The 14yo's that I mentioned before had several scenes in which they were truly hurt by his skipping class, because they need someone they can trust, someone to depend on.   That is something very deep, and could have been delved into more deeply had the show continued.

Also, there was, in the last few episodes, a deepening respect of Paula for Josh, as she realized that he truly does believe in the dying art of journalism.  It would have been interesting to have Josh slowly redirect his reverence for Wes and focus on Paula as a mentor.

But, alas, Mindy Kaling will most likely come out with another good project, if this one does not generate a second season.

I do wish, though, that when they cancel these shows, instead of a cliffhanger, they would give just enough cash for the show to wrap everything up in an hour or hour & 1/2 long finale.

Overheard at Booth 1: Morning and Lunch Time

In the morning, she saw me put the clean silverware on the counter before I had put them in the drawer.

She said, "The cats walk on there!  They have dirty paws!  You have a hygiene problem, you are never clean!"

She walks out to go to work, and I went on putting up the dishes from the dishwasher.  She came back in for something just as I was banging the pots into their shelves under the cabinet.

"Stop banging the dishes!" she shouts.

Later that day, around lunch time, I call her.   "I cleaned the counters because the cats are dirty," I say.

She says, "Look, I'm breaking down here and I have no energy and I don't have time for your passive aggressive attitude."

Overheard at Booth 1: Muzzling the Medicals

M: Did you hear that they're cutting funding to NIH?

C: Good!

M: How can you say that?

C: You don't know!  I know!  I work at the University and you don't know what they do to the animals there ... they have dogs in cages, monkeys that they separate from their mothers just to see how they'll react, rabbits that they pour chemicals in their eyes just to study what medicines they can make.  All that is from Federal grant money, but YOU!  You think that it's all about cancer research.  Well, they already have a cure for cancer but they won't let anybody know because cancer is such a big industry, so yeah, they SHOULD cut off all the funding to ALL scientists until they can figure out what's really helpful and what's not.

M: Wow.  That's a lot to unpack there.

C: You should pay more attention to what's happening instead of being such a Leftist with your head in the sand thinking everyone is so goody-goody!

Overheard at Booth 1: Live Free by Reading Galatians

2024-0915

Galatians 1:1-9

First of the 13 letters written by the Apostle Paul

Laundromat Preacher - this was the most fun, because people couldn't just walk away and leave their laundry.  He said it was especially fun when they got someone who had just put the quarters in and HA!  they're there for another 45 minutes!

Spring Break Preacher - When asking the question, "If you died today do you know where you would go?" and the partyer would say, "Give me 5 bucks so I can get another drink and I'll answer your question"

Isaiah 64:6 - we are all unclean rags.

NOTE: read the verse - could be made into a song.

Acts Ch 13:38-39 is Paul AT Galatia

2 Peter 3:15-16 - Peter writes that people twist the scriptures (this goes along with what we are studying in Revelation in our Bible Study Group)  ... this passage also shows Peter elevating Paul's epistles to the lvel of Old Testament Scripture

Galatians 1:3-5 should be memorized as a creed.  Call it the "Galatian Creed"

Overheard at Booth 1: Timothy Shayamalet

PITCH

Screenwriter: It's about an actor named Timothy Shayamalet, who stars in, like, EVERY movie within two or three consecutive years, and everyone finds out at the end that he's been dead the whole time.

Producer: No way I'm dropping a hundred mil on that.  Get me another Fast and Furious.

SW [sighs]: OK, I can get that to you by next Wednesday.

P: AI can get it to me by midnight tonight.

SW: Well, shit.

Overheard at Booth 1: The True Virus

... and when they looked back on those fateful times, they realized that the physical virus was not the true killer, but the mental virus.   THAT was the virus that rotted the mind and brittled the soul, until there was nothing left of the human animal but confusion and blind rage.

Overheard at Booth 1: Disassociation Tomato - written on Nov 18

Disassociation Tomato 2023 November 18

x

We jumped through a portal and came out the armoire door in a hotel room.  I went over to the window and saw the downtown skyline.  It seemed like we were on the fourth or fifth floor of the hotel.

I put down my backpack on the shelf that had a chair and could be used for a desk.  Above it was a TV screen that looked like the main display panel on the bridge of the USS Enterprise.  It was a beautiful, massive screen.  It looked like it took up the space of the entire wall.

Also, it was SO THIN.  Barely bigger than the thickness of a cigar box.

I asked Acsa how they did that – I mean, TVs have tubes and electronics and stuff in them.  These are things my friends know better than I do, but I’ve never paid attention much.  All I know is that our TV is on a big shelving unit, which is also made for my dad’s stereo equipment, and sits right on top of the space where he keeps his record collection.

This TV was mounted on the wall, and also had an arm where it could be pulled out and moved to an angle, probably so that you could see it better from the bed.

There was only one bed.

And two of us.

xx.

“I need to tell you something,” Acsa said. She took off the hat and the goggles and sat down on the edge of the bed.   “COVID is bad.  I mean, really bad.  Actually worse than the Flu Epidemic of 1919.”

“That the Spanish Flu?” I asked.

“If that’s what you guys call it, yeah.   But COVID is not only worse because it killed millions, and I mean MILLIONS across the world, but it was also worse because it destroyed the ability of people to agree on what reality is.”

“What does that even mean?” I asked her.

“It means this,” she held up her tricorder (I am not going to call it a “cell” – no way, no how, not ever.  It is a tricorder!)  “Everyone was hooked to this.  Everyone believed this.  And there were many many MANY voices on this, and they were all chattering away, and they confused so many people that many more people died.  People died who didn’t need to die.  And really, there is no amount of mathematical study of probablity or Potentialities that will ever give us an accurate number of who might have been saved and who might have lived.”

“That’s horrible!” I said.

“Yes, it is.  And now, I want to tell you, that you could have stopped this.”

xxx.

That was weird.  Look, she just took me to some Mad Max post-Apolcaptic hellscape, and I’d been seeing deserted streets and empty grocery stores and people afraid to get close to each other, and everyone masked up and running around like they are all “duck and cover” and now Acsa is telling me that somehow I’m the key to all this?

I was like, “No.  No way.”   I’m not THAT guy in THOSE novels who has the secret to “save the day” and all that.  Not me.

It wasn’t me, though.  It all had to do my band, the Ardmore Gongmongers

iv.

Asca laid out the case like this:  Dan Maxwell, our bass player, the third of the triad that is the Ardmore Gongmongers, the same guy who described himself as the “John Entwistle” of the group, and wrote songs like “Cecil the Aardvark” (I heard it – it was on the iPod.  It’s HILARIOUS!) … was the same guy who COULD HAVE STOPPED COVID.

Ok, I can tell that you guys are probably rolling your eyes right now, but let me try to explain it to you the way Acsa explained it to me:  Dan, after the band broke up after college, went on to continue his studies in biology, and became a biologist working for a diabetes medicine manufacturer, looking for better diabetes drugs.

If Dan HAD NOT been in the band, he WOULD HAVE met a Chinese exchange student in his medical program, and he would have gone into the field of virology, where he and she would be married and work with both American and Chinese companies, working on treatments for various viruses – like the Spanish Flu of 1919.

What is the one way that Dan takes this course?

No Ardmore Gongmongers.

There are no Ardmore Gongmongers if I’m dead.

At 15.

By a gunshot to my head.

v.

So that’s how it plays out.  Yeah, it’s kind of like a twisted “It’s a Wonderful Life” – kinda like what Howard the Duck experienced in Bizarre Adventures #34 (I love that issue, by the way – I have a mint copy that I keep sealed and I have a copy that I read)

I told Acsa, “Look, in a world with all these millions of people …”

“Billions,” she corrected me.

“Billions,” I said.  “Not just one guy can change things like that.”

“No,” she admitted, “Dan doesn’t make a cure for COVID or anything, but he and his wife work on a team that helps to mitigate the spread.  What they do doesn’t STOP it, but it makes it so that not everybody dies.   And when COVID is just like the flu, it never makes all the people freak out and confuse so many people.”

vi.

And to show me what happened, Acsa showed me on her tricorder.  We also spent all afternoon watching the television.

I saw people in Italy, not leaving their houses, singing to each other from their balconies.

I saw refrigerator trucks parked outside of hospitals in New York City, where they were holding all the dead because people were dying so fast and filling up their morgues.

I saw stories of people emptying shelves of toilet paper.  (Didn’t really understand the toilet paper.  I mean, come on guys, just use a washcloth if you have to!)  (I know that might sound gross, but … for real!)

Then I saw government officials of the state saying that we needed to get people back to work and if that means that they give COVID to grandma and grandpa and they die, then that’s the price to be paid to make sure that America stays strong.

That last one really hit me.  That I think weirded me out more than anything else.  That sounded like what they taught us in school that the Soviets tell their people.  DIE so that the STATE can live.

What the hell kind of place IS 2020, when my country started sounding like the Commies?

vii.

And then … she showed me the other news: the idea that spread that the government had made COVID to kill the elderly.  Ideas that the Jews had made COVID.  That the Liberals had made COVID.  That the Chinese had made COVID to kill THEIR elderly, but they just messed up and it got out of their contol.  That the Chinese had made COVID to kill AMERICANS.

That COVID didn’t exist.
That it was just the flu, and the government was using it to control people.

Acsa said, “These were real deaths, real deaths of real people, but the real death was the truth.”

“What was the truth?” I asked her.  “What exactly IS the truth?”

“The Truth,” she told me, “is that everyone who lives anywhere HAS to agree on what reality is.   If they don’t agree on what is happening in front of their eyes, everyone dies.   Alone and scratching at each other’s eyes.”

vii

Look, I know this is hard to believe.  This is hard for me to believe, even now.  But this is the part where I have to let you know that this is coming.  It’s coming.  It’ll be here in 35 years.  I don’t know if I’ll be still around to see it – I mean, to see it AGAIN.  But it’s real.

Acsa knew it only as the past, because she was born decades after it.   But for her, it was still in the memories of those who’d lived through it, and there had been a lot of “sorting out” she called it, to determine what could reliably be called the “truth” because the survivors who had lived through it were the ones who had completely different sides.

Which is weird, because all the old people I know are in total agreement: they all grew up in the Depression, they all fought in World War II, they all lived through the 50s and saw their kids become adults in the 60s, and they all agree that everyone my age has it good and that none of us would ever be able to live through the same kind of hardships they had when they were all 15 years old.

Acsa’s old people are completely different.  Half of them say that the world was ripped apart by COVID, and the other half say that COVID never happened and no one ever died, and that the other half just created COVID in their minds in order to try to take their guns away.

I can kinda see why Acsa wanted to spend most of her time with dragons rather than with people.

Overheard at Booth 1: Lucky and Otis Discuss Contrarianism (No, They Don't)

Lucky Moran: Is it just me or has everybody become completely contrarian these days?

Otis Redwing: That hasn't happened.  Not everybody's contrarian.

Lucky: You just proved my point, dude!

Otis: No I didn't.

Overheard at Booth 1: Deacon Dad

I think probably one of the toughest things about trying to be a good Christian husband and father, if I am going to be honest, is the constant pressure of "Wow, not only do I need to keep a roof over their heads and the lights on, but I also have to worry about where their immortal souls are going to spend eternity?"

I mean, when you really think about it, that's a LOT of pressure.

Overheard at Booth 1: Maui Fight

Wife had been watching a short TikTok Video about the Maui fires and a person was saying that a bunch of investors were swooping in to try to buy land.  the natives do not want to sell their ancestral land to investors who want to build resorts on this prime property.

My wife showed me the video and said, "They're saying that these investors used a laser beam to start the fire."

This particular TikTok video did not make that assumption.  The man in the video was ONLY talking about the vultures trying to swoop in and take advantage of a tragedy before the people could even mourn their loss.

I agreed with my wife that it was definitely a possibility that the fire may have intentionally been set.  I said, "Developers have set fires intentionally before, it's possible they did this time too."  Then I added, "Even if it wasn't intentional..."

"See!  That's why we fight!  In your little brain, you want to say 'even IF!' ... you NEVER believe me.  There is no 'even if' !  It WAS intentional.  Developers set the fire, but you never take my side and you never believe me and you always make fun of me and this is why we can't talk about anything any more, and I don't want to fight because we're supposed to be going out on a date today, but you always seem to want to just dismiss everything I say and we can't agree on anything, we can't even agree on where to go to church, and you're supposed to be the head of this family and you can't even do that!  Now, leave me alone because I want to use the bathroom and I don't want to say anything that I really shouldn't!"

Overheard at Booth 1: Really Doesn't Matter

Really doesn't matter the actors on strike over AI, because at the end of the day, the execs already won.

What makes you say that?

They say they're up in arms over AI using their faces and trying to say that public doesn't want that, but really doesn't matter because at the end of the day the public don't care if that's really Tom Cruise or Timothy Chamalet or Zendaya or Margot Robbie's faces or just some AI image of the faces because all they want's the image.

Come on, now, sure they want to know that's a real actor talking.

They didn't care about Gollum being CG.  Or Rocket in the Guardians.

That's motion capture, that's different.  Actors still shooting scenes.

That's where it started though, all that background, CG.  Not a real set.

Of course, all that people want is to go the movies to escape to worlds of fantasy.

Which is why the AI faces don't matter to the people.  Carrie Fisher - the last Star Wars.  People thought it was silly, but no one said it was WRONG.

I think a lot of people said it was wrong.  The actress was dead and they were using her face.

But not enough said it was wrong to ever make them say, "we promise never to do this again."

OK, I'll give you that one.

What I'm saying is that AI will replace Mo-Cap.  Because AI, at the end of the day, don't go on strike, and it really doesn't matter to people who, as you said, ALL that people want is to go the movies to escape to worlds of fantasy.

A nice spin on moving on after not getting what ever we didn't get. I'm thinking of a job that, had I got it, I'd have been excessed within a few years. Instead I had a full career with that same agency.

letfreedomring similar situation, very early in my career I wanted to work at a company so bad but I took a job across the street from the company because they did not hire me. Looking out my window one day, I saw TV crews, camera trucks and a big commotion. The company I wanted so desperately to work for had gone bankrupt. I was glad I had NOT gotten that job over there.

BRIDGE

V1
When I was a child
I spoke just as a child
But now I am not child
And I will put away childish things

V2
But even still we see
Through a glass, dimly,
Even though I know, one day
I’ll know Him as clearly as He knows me.

V3
And the three greatest qualities
are Faith Hope and Charity
But the Love that gives and asks for nothing
Is the greatest love, the greatest of all Three

Bridge
When you are a stranger in a strange land
there is something you should know
It does no good to gain the world
if you have to sell your soul
When you travel door to door
to tell the world of the Good News
If they refuse to receive, then just leave
and shake their dust from off your shoes.

V4
I am saved by grace
I will feel His warm embrace
When I see Him face to face
and I shall know
even as also
as I am known

Still working on the vocal phrasing, which may be similar.

Overheard at Booth 1: Lock and Key

BLUES SONG

I was listening to Early Texas Blues song and heard one called "Lock and Key Blues"

Couldn't hear the lyrics all that well, but this came to mind as a Blues song.  The misogyny is on full display here, and beyond the obvious satire of the typical Blues song, there is a seriousness, in that men do indeed murder their spouses for reasons such as are described in these lyrics

Lock and Key

I got a woman
keep her under lock and key
I said I got a woman
keep her under lock and key
That’s the only way I know
she won’t run around on me

I got a woman
keep her chained to the floor
Oh yeah I got a woman
And I keep chained to the floor
That way she won’t
be crawlin’ ‘round some other man’s door

Well you know I got a woman
She six feet underground.
I said, I got a woman
She be six feet under da ground
That’s the only way I know
She won’t be runnin’ ‘round.

That’s the only way I be sure
she won’t be runnin’ all over town.

Overheard at Booth 1: Paolo Coelho - The Pilgrimage (1987)

Paolo Coelho The Pilgrimage

My brother-in-law read this book and then went to travel the Road to Campostela with his wife.

He raved about Paolo Coelho and how poetic he is and the descriptions of northern Spain, and over the years, I've heard about Coelho and how wonderful a poet it is and yes, he has a wonderful way with words, is obviously highly intelligent, and a gifted storyteller

... he's obviously also a Satanist.

And this is a Satanic book.

Now, don't get all bent out of shape, Liberals!  And don't get all frothy, Conservatives!  I'm not saying that this is one of those books books that comes right out and says, "OK Kiddoes, let's all worship the Dark Lord!" ... because it's not.

In fact, there is a lot in this book that is a factual observation of humanity.

For example, during the prayer of Coelho's guide on page 152:

"Pity those who eat and drink and sate themselves, but are unhappy in their satiety.  But pity even more those who fast, and who censure and prohibit, and who thereby see themselves as saints, preaching your name in the streets.  For neither of these types of people know thy law that says, 'If I bear witness to myself, my witness is not true."

and (page 153):

"Pity those who reduce the cosmos to an explanation, God to a magic potion, and humanity to beings with basic needs that must be satisfied, because they never hear the music of the spheres.  But have even more pity on those who have blind faith, and who in their laboratories transform mercury into gold, and who are surrounded by their books about the secret of the Tarot and the power of the pyramids.  Neither of those kinds of people know thy law that says, 'Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.'"

And I must admit, one of the last lines that struck me described me a bit TOO perfectly:

"...people who consider themselves wise are often indecisive when command is called for and rebellious when they are called on to obey.  They are ashamed to give orders and consider it dishonorable to receive them."

But we must remember that Satan himself is a shrewd observer of the human spirit, and so is Coelho, and by and large, while this book describes the road to self-discovery, it is, at its core, utterly humanist.  It speaks directly about self-enlightenment and self-empowerment, and while it acknowledges the beauty of God, it focuses primarily on the strength of the individual.

I had had my suspicions when, at the beginning of the travel, Coelho's guide told him that fallen angels, sometimes called demons, were merely messengers, with no true ulterior motives, and also helped the writer conjure his personal messenger.  Conjuring demons for advice?  Yeah ... that's frowned upon in scripture.

And then there's the dog.  The dog is the real demon in this story, the one that Coelho has to fight, to gain mastery over.  The demon (as a dog) even has the name Legion, and in the book IS the same named demon as is recorded in the Bible.  In the scene of the "final showdown" the writer describes how Legion enters him, and then he is (by his own will and strength), able to cast Legion out.

This is completely against the teachings of Christ.  When we accept Christ, we are sealed by the Holy Spirit.  We belong to God.  And no demon can ever enter in.

And while Paolo might not be a Christ-Follower in that sense, the one thing that God does teach us through Christ is that we human individuals have no power to fight the forces of evil on our own.  In fact, ALL of Christ's teachings are that we are helpless to save ourselves and MUST rely on our Lord and Savior.  Coelho's bogus poetry denies that power and this book is simply one of millions of books that teaches humans that YOU too can draw demons into your body and cast them out if you just struggle hard enough.

That, my friend, is a very Satanic way of thinking.

And again, not in the way of sacrificing animals on some altar on Halloween, but in the exaltation of the individual as God.  This is ultimately what Satan tries to teach people:  "You don't need God..   You ARE God."

So ... is it a well-written book?  It has some nice poetic sentiments in it, but ultimately it cannot hide the ugliness of what it truly is.

But I can tell  you that I probably won't be reading The Alchemist

Overheard a Booth 1: You Make Funny Voices

Morning, getting ready for work, wife is ready first and is just about to leave.

Wife: Love you, see you tonight!  Oh, and ... stop making funny voices.

Husband: What do you mean?

W: Last night, as you were in the closet, getting ready for bed, you were making these funny voices, like you were having a conversation.  Like, with two other people... one even cackled!

H: Ah, yeah, that must've been this comedy show that one of my friends sent me.  I was just remembering it and saying it out loud, because it sounded so cool.

W: Well, it's weird.  And it's not the first time.  I hope you don't do it at work.  People will think you're crazy.

H: I don't.  No worries.  Have a great day at work babe!

W: You too, mi amor.

She leaves.

Voice 1: Whoa, shit, that was close.

Voice 2: Yeah, you gotta be more careful, dude!

H: Me?  You two need to ratchet it down a notch.  Especially with the cackle.

Voice 1: Well, if she's on to us, we may have to handle the situation.

H: What do you mean by that?

Voice 2: Just what we said ... handle the situation.

H: You guys aren't gonna handle anything.  You're gonna back off.

Voice 2: Yeah ... sure.

Overheard at Booth 1: Send Me On

Send Me On

If I get to be a burden
Send me on, send me on
If I get to be a burden
Send me on to see the Lord

If a machine is breathin' for me
Send me on, send me on
If a machine is breathin' for me
Send me on to see the Lord

If you have to wipe my bottom
Send me on, send me on
If you have to wipe my bottom
Send me on to see the Lord

Just give me sweet morphine
Pull the plug from that machine
Put a pillow on my face
So I can feel my Father's Grace
Just send me on to see the Lord!

Overheard at Booth 1: The One Who Puts on His Armor Should Not Boast Like the One Who Takes It Off

While I know it's cool these days to make fun of the Bible, last night a preacher gave a passage that's pretty badass:

And the King of Israel said, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes     it off.’”

    - 1 Kings 20:11

The sermon was about boasting, and the pastor was talking about the people who talk about "OH I'm going to do this and OH I'm going to do all this wonderful stuff and OH people are going to be amazed at all the stuff I'll do!"

Essentially, stop bragging when you've got nothing to brag about.  Don't talk about what you are going to do... DO IT.  Then, once it's done, you can talk about it, critique it, test it to see if it was a success or not.

The guy going out to the battle shouldn't say he's going to win the battle.  The guy who has come back from the battle, alive and still strong enough to take off his armor, that's the guy who gets to tell the story.

Overheard at Booth 1: Medicine Train

Heard a song today and this Blues song came into my head.

It's about drug addiction.  It's not that subtle.  But then, while the Blues is metaphorical, it ain't subtle!

MEDICINE TRAIN

One thing I tell you mama
tell you what we gotta do
One thing I tell you mama
tell you what we gotta do
We gotta get off this Medicine Train
This ain’t good for me or you.

Well this Medicine Train
it’s roaring on down the track
Well this Medicine Train
It’s racing on down the track.
We stay on this train, mama,
You know we ain’t never coming back

When we bought our ticket
Medicine train looked so fine
When we bought two tickets mama
Medicine train looked so fine.
But we getting sicker, mama,
the further we go down that line.

One thing I tell you mama
tell you what we gotta do
One thing I tell you mama
tell you what we gotta do
We gotta get off this Medicine Train
It’s gonna kill both me and you.

Gotta get off this Medicine Train
Gonna kill me and it’s gonna kill you.
