Overread at Table 4: Haiku for a Librarian

The Librarian

She is pure haiku.
Fragile.  Her eyes, slight soft smile,
Like butterfly wings.

Overread at Booth 2: Someone Mentioned the Draft

Someone Mentioned the Draft
(in Late June 2019 on the Whispers of War with Iran)

& here we are, praying again that there will be no draft, because it's not our children we want to die, always someone else's children, not ours, no, & we do not see that each child is our child, all children are our children, & none of them should float away on an ill wind.

Overread at Table 2: Summerwash

Summerwash

Rather better a broken nose than a broken home,
youthink?

Those rose petals do indeed look radiant in the sunlight
that wavers through the garden through the mist of the
sprinklers in the summerwash-
ing away
the dogshakes droplets
from his fur and

we wish that these
broken bottles in our hands

were once again
the champagne flutes of

our wedding day,

so long ago,
so utterly forgotten.

Overheard at Table 3: Nurses in Lousiana

All these jobs are going away, I work at Home Depot and all the cashier jobs are gone, but when the computers go down, we always have to be there to help the customers, because the computers can't fix themselves, you know..

And that's all fine for me, because I'm set to retire in the next seven years, but these kids coming up today, what are they going to be doing?  What jobs are they going to wanna do?   Cashiering used to at least give them the experience with dealing with people and with dealing with numbers and money.
If they don't even have those skills at least, what are they gonna have skills for?

I was talking to my sisters, they're nurse practitioners in Louisiana, but even they are being phased out. Harder to find jobs for them any more.  More and more those jobs are going away too.  What are they going to do?

That's probably gonna spread to here in Houston.  Some day.  Soon.  Who knows?  But when it does, are we just gonna have a whole bunch of people standing around with no jobs and nothing to do?

We don't want that.  When there is a whole lot of people who have nothing to do, they will find some trouble, believe you me, they will MAKE some trouble.... for everybody.

Overheard at Booth 4: The Dead Don't Die (2019)

The Dead Don't Die is a great film if you like Jim Jarmusch and if you like Zombie films.   You have to like both.  If you like one but not the other, you will not like this film.

Again, if you like Jim Jarmusch but not Zombie films, you will not like it, and conversely,
if you like Zombie films but not Jim Jarmusch, you will not like it.

Fortunately for me, I like both.

My son took me to this movie to show me that he thinks I'm cool again.
Or maybe because all his friends were out of town this weekend, I don't know.

But either way, he sprang for the tickets AND for the treats, so that was awesome.

There's really not much to tell about the movie, because again, if you know Jarmusch and zombies, you'll know what you're getting.  He delivers.  That's all you need to know.

I really like Adam Driver as a total deadpan actor.  He's the best at that.   He sucks at any attempt at emotion (like a whiny Sith lord.) But here, just like in Paterson, he's absolutely fantastic.

All the other actors are also at their deadpan best.  Only Selena Gomez and Chloe Sevigny can't help but relay some true emotion.   I don't know if that was intentional on Jarmusch's part, or if they simply can't be wooden, but it was a nice contrast to the nihilism.

My son had the best critique of the film.  He said, "I think that's kind of like how a zombie apocalypse would be.  Just sort of like, 'Meh.  Oh well, the world's ending'."

Oh yeah ... and Steve Buscemi's hat that reads:  KEEP AMERICA WHITE AGAIN

guilty secret: I want that hat!!

Overheard at Table 2: First Date with June

June:  So I have PTSD and my ex has PTSD and my son has special needs and my daughter is 14, but more than just a normal 14 year old, she's a 14 year old girl who also has a brother with special needs and two parents with PTSD and my son's medication is out of balance because his regular doctor suddenly left the country, so you know it's really rare for me to get out like this, I just wanted you to know that.

Augustus: Sooooooooo ... I think I left the water running at home.

Overread at Table 4: Speaking in Tongues - a brief study

GLOSSALALIA
MR
GEO 2016-0722

GLOSSALALIA

Origin
Friday night Brother in GEO stated that the Baptist Church has changed its position on speaking in tongues, and intimated that speaking in tongues is what signifies we are close to God and are filled with the Holy Spirit.

My Background
In full confession, I was raised in the Episcopalian church.  My parents baptized me as a baby; I received First Communion when I was twelve (when I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord), then I renewed my faith and put my baptism in the correct order when I was baptized at Memorial Baptist Church, Tulsa OK, at the age of 34.  From that, the reader may draw their own conclusions about by walk with Jesus Christ.

Definition
As will be discussed in greater detail later, there may prove to be some differences in the terms “tongues”  and “speaking in tongues”  For this report, we will state that “speaking in tongues” refers to the practice of speaking in a language incoherent to anybody other than the speaker, and usually practiced in communal worship in Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches.
Additionally, as we will see, not all references to “speaking in tongues” refers to this definition just stated.  However, many people may and do conflate these different passages in order to advance a particular view on speaking in tongues.

35 Times
One article said it was mentioned 35 times.  They are listed here:

ACTS
Speaking in tongues – these were speaking to the masses.  The Holy Spirit spoke through them as a way to bring glory to God.  This is not the same as speaking in tongues as talking to God.

MARK 16:15-18
Jesus said, “They will speak in new tongues”  It is possible that he was referring only to the incident in Acts.  It is also possible that He was speaking to the ability to learn new languages in order to go out into the world to fulfill the Great commission.

[OK, so I've only listed two of the 35.  Need to research further]

God’s Language

The human body is finite.  Thus, the brain, the lungs, and the vocal chords are also finite.  While at the time of this writing we do not understand the mysteries of the brain beyond the knowledge that it is a very powerful and mysterious organ, yet we do realize that it cannot behold the complex mysteries of God.  The same with the lungs and the vocal chords and the mouth and the tongue and the palate, all of which are used to create speech.  The range of human sounds is apparently infinite, with over 3000 languages in recorded human history (most of which are dying today, but that’s another study!) and with a variety of vowels, consonants, glottal stops, grunts, and clicks.  However, the number of sounds, while innumerable, are indeed finite.

Overheard at Booth 5: Two Officials

American Official: The Administration wants you to step up patrols on your border with Guatemala.  You gotta stop the migrants coming in.

Mexican Official: We are already doing everything we can.  You seem to think we have more resources than we do.

American Official: Look, we know it's tough.  So, if you were to, say, accidentally on purpose ... kill  a few of the border crossers during the course of your patrols, well, we would look the other way.

Mexican Official: We already DO that and you already DO look the other way!

American Official: OK, fine ... how about we look the other way and drop some huge bags of cash into your bank accounts as well?

Mexican Official: NOW you're talking!
