Overheard at Table 2: Why Be Kind?

- So why should I be kind, really?  I mean, everybody else is so rude and mean and backstabby, and I mean ALL the time.

- That's why you have to be kind.  Because as long as there are a handful of kind people, then there is still hope for humanity.  Once that's gone, there's really no hope left.

- So you're saying I'm saving the world?

- With one kindness at a time.

- That's a lot of responsibility.

- No one ever said kindness is easy.

VERSES

BRIDGE

V1
When I was a child
I spoke just as a child
But now I am not child
And I will put away childish things

V2
But even still we see
Through a glass, dimly,
Even though I know, one day
I’ll know Him as clearly as He knows me.

V3
And the three greatest qualities
are Faith Hope and Charity
But the Love that gives and asks for nothing
Is the greatest love, the greatest of all Three

Bridge
When you are a stranger in a strange land
there is something you should know
It does no good to gain the world
if you have to sell your soul
When you travel door to door
to tell the world of the Good News
If they refuse to receive, then just leave
and shake their dust from off your shoes.

V4
I am saved by grace
I will feel His warm embrace
When I see Him face to face
and I shall know
even as also
as I am known

Inspired by Death Cab for Cutie "You Are a Tourist"
Kept the drum beat, used the basic chord structure
Still working on the vocal phrasing, which may be similar.
Need to know how much of the melody will be considered fair usage.

Overheard at Table 1: They on a Cruise

Scene: a Cruise Liner - on deck.  A man is standing by the railing and sees a woman suddenly fall overboard into the water.

Man: Oh my GOD!  Woman overboard!  Someone throw her a life preserver.

Another Person: How do you know it's a "her"?

Yet Another Person: Absolutely!  You should use "they" if they have not told your their gender.

And Yet One More Person:  You should be ashamed of yourself, presuming someone's identity like that!

Man: Holy shit, it doesn't matter!  She's ... I mean, THEY ... are drowning.  Quick, grab that life preserver.

[goes to where the preserver is]

AP: Wait.  How do you know they WANT to be saved?

YAP: True!  Are you doing something against their will?

Man: I just saw her fall!

AYOMP: You just saw THEY fall.

YAP: Wouldn't that be "You just saw THEM fall"?

AYOMP: You know, I'm not really sure.

AP: THEM is still the direct object, THEY is the pronoun.

YAP: Just doesn't sound quite right though.

AP: You need to shake off the last vestiges of your Colonizer mentality, and just let grammar FLOWWWWWW...

Man: For Fuck's sake just THROW THE LIFE PRESERVER AND LET THEY/THEM DECIDE IF THEY/THEM WANT TO BE SAVED OR NOT!

YAP: The Cis-male has a good point.

[They throw the life preserver overboard]

Man [looking over the railing, shakes his head]: Never mind.  They drowned.

[Man walks off, looking for the nearest bar]

AP [to YAP]: How do you know he's Cis? Did he TELL you he's Cis?

AYOMP: You mean "Did THEY tell you ..."

[scene ends]

Overheard at Table 1: Whitby Bay

Whitby Bay

For all you lovers of Sea Shanties!

Whitby Bay
Lyrics by @GGLambertesq
Music by MR
Performed by Armadillo Railroad

This song is intended to be sung as a shanty by multiple voices, but we offer this as a template from which to compound the extra harmonies ...

The photos in the video are of Liscannor, in County Clare, Province of Munster, the Republic of Ireland - a beautiful seaside village tucked next to the famous Cliffs of Moher.  But to be honest, since the Cliffs of Moher are now gutted with tourists, most of whom will arrive by bus and then be carted off by bus, and who will imbibe in the restaurant built into the hillside next to the Cliffs, this village is perfect for the TRUE traveler who wants a break from the crowds to have a quiet walk in the bucolic scenery.

A perfect place to come in to, after an afternoon shoulder-to-shoulder with the glut of tourists, or after a year and a day at sea!

Whitby Bay
Lyrics by @GGLambertesq

For we sail away from Whitby Bay
Over the seas for a year and a day
On seas of green and skies of grey
Over the seas for a year and a day

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

We put our trust in skipper and God
Over the seas for a year and a day
Chasing haddock and flounder and whiting and cod
Over the seas for a year and a day

Through storms and sunshine, wind and rain
Over the seas for a year and a day
We’ll chase the cod there and back again
Over the seas for a year and a day

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And when the hold’s filled to the brim
Over the seas for a year and a day
We’ll head for home, it’s time to come in
Over the seas for a year and a day

There I’ll ask my Mary to marry merry me
And I’ll settle down in Whitby Bay
And no more will I go upon the sea
for a year … and a day

Overheard at Table 2: Dark Places (2015)

Dark Places

I do like the movies in which Charlize Theron does not have to play the "beautiful" woman.   She is a beautiful woman, who doesn't mind playing women who are not, indeed, beautiful, neither physically nor in personality.

In this movie, she is an adult who suffered a horrific trauma when she was six years old - the brutal murder of her mother and sisters at the hand of her brother - and she has actually been living on the money that has flowed in from emotionally supportive people.

However, she has begun to "age out" - she's in her early thirties and the money's drying up, and she's never had an actual job.  She's a hoarder, and a misanthrope.  Barely any social skills.

Then, she takes payment for rehashing her story to a group of armchair detectives, who believe that her brother is innocent.   This takes her down the road to a deep introspection regarding all that she has ever known: unpacking the story that she has retold so many times that it has actually become fact, to her.

This story seems like it could be based on true events, because the murder is definitely something that happens, and our characters are flawed (just like the rest of us).

There are some weaknesses in the plot (such as "where did the insurance money go?" and "how did that person stay hidden for so long?") as well what might be considered a Deus Ex Machina ... or what I call "forcing the story" (don't want to give away any spoilers, but watch it and you'll see what I mean)

However, overall, it is a very good exploration into the difference between what we remember happened and what possibly really happened.

Definitely worth watching, especially if you are interested in the more cerebral horrors of the human character.  Similar movies would be Gone Girl and Nocturnal Animals

Overhead at Table 3: On Perfection

In some sense, humans are perfect beings who never achieve their full perfection, merely by nature of their deeply imperfect choices.

However, by extension, nothing that humans ever create can be perfect. All their creations, including Artificial Intelligence, will always lack that potential of the humans to perfection.

.

.

.

However, in full disclosure, when I use the word "perfect" I mean in the Biblical sense, specifically in the sense of following Jesus Christ, which is best described in the letters written by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  Perfection, meaning simply, properly equipped to promote the Word of Salvation through Jesus Christ and presenting one's entire life, every moment, into the adequate and just glorification of the Most High God.

Non-believers may simply believe that "perfection" means "leading one's best life including the defense of just values and non-harm to other humans, animals, or the environment."   That definition is far below mine, however, it is acceptable in the context of loving and caring for all things around us.

That said: again, I assert that no AI will ever be able to live up to either definition of the standard of "perfection" ... it is possible that it may come close to the non-believer's definition, but never to the Christian Biblical sense of the word.

That is because AI will never have a soul.

But that is a conversation for another time ...

Overheard at Table 3: Times of Profound and Drastic Change

"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists."

Eric Hoffer, from "Reflections on the Human Condition, 1973.

"In times of profound change, the learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."

Al Rogers

Why would the puzzle site have gotten this incorrect?  Where did they get the quote from Al Rogers?

Overheard at Table 4: On Equality

You know, some may pretend we've reached equality, but every few days, I top off my the gas tank of my wife's car, so she won't ever have to be standing at a gas pump in the dark before sunrise while on her way to work.

Palm Sunday

This morn, 2 Galileans
took our mule and her colt
WTH?
Then they told us
they followed The Healer.

Great guy.

So we're glad to help.
Hope we get the colt back, though.
